About Portsmouth
Portsmouth also known as
Pompey, is home to three hugely important historic ships,
HMS Victory, Nelson's famous flagship at the battle of Trafalgar,
HMS Warrior the first ironclad warship and the
Mary Rose, Henry VIII's warship that sank in the Solent just off of Southsea Castle.
These are all housed at the

Dockyard, home of the

Spinnaker Tower built right on the edge of Portsmouth Harbour at
Gunwharf Quays. Portsmouth Harbour has been used in a number of films and television programmes such as Tomorrow Never Dies (James Bond),
Oscar and Lucinda, Making Waves, Silent Witness, Mr Bean and Eastenders. The local area was used extensively in the filming
of Tommy, The Who's rock opera.
How to get to Portsmouth
By Road: Portsmouth enjoys good road connections, the A3(M) puts London only 11/2 hours away and the M27/A27 connects
the city with Britain's motorway network. Once you're here there's a comprehensive bus network across the Portsmouth area
and beyond. And if you want to see the rest of the country, National Express, the national coach company, operates regular
daily services from the Hard.
By Air: the major London airports
Gatwick and
Heathrow, both 60 miles (100km) away, and
Southampton International Airport are in easy reach of Portsmouth Harbour via good
rail and rail/
coach connections. Southampton International Airport, just 22 miles away, provides services to domestic UK, Channel Islands, French
and Dutch destinations.
By Sea: the Harbour's ferry port offers a number of routes to and from France, Spain and the Channel Islands. P&O
Ferries operate a service to Bilbao, Brittany Ferries run services to Caen, Cherbourg and St Malo, LD Lines run a service

Wightlink ferries provide car and passenger services to Fishbourne and Ryde on the Isle of Wight and
Hovertravel operate a passenger service to Ryde.The
Gosport Ferry is the main cross-harbour connection which links Gosport with Portsmouth. It operates seven days a week between Gosport Esplanade
and Portsmouth Harbour Rail Station.
